WESTERVILLE, Ohio —
Reggie Grayek (Shavertown, Pa./Wyoming Seminary College Prep.) scored an unassisted goal in the 104th minute to give Marietta College a 1-0 overtime win over Otterbein University Thursday (March 18) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer action. The Pioneers improve to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the OAC, while Otterbein slips to 1-1 on the season and 1-1 in the OAC.
"This was a road win that the boys can be proud of. The wind played a major part in the game and the irony of it is that the game winner came against the wind," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "Reggie's (Grayek) goal was brilliant. His shot is hard to handle and he finally got one off. This was our first win against Otterbein in a few years. They are well coached and present a number of challenges for us."
Grayek took a thrown in inside the Pioneers' offensive end of the field and dribbled down the right side and into the 18-yard box. He fired a bullet just inside the near post from 15 yards out beating the Otterbein keeper for the game winner.
The victory snapped a five match losing streak to the Cardinals and puts Marietta in a three-way tie atop the OAC standings with six points.
Grayek
Otterbein playing with the wind, controlled the first half. The Cardinals outshot Marietta 6-1 in the first period. The Pioneers failed to put a shot on goal in the half. After switching sides in the second half, Marietta gained control and turned up the press on the Cardinal defense.
The Pioneers took six shots in the second period, including two on goal, while holding Otterbein to just two shots in the half. Marietta had all six corner kicks in the half and carried that momentum into overtime.
Marietta held the Cardinals without a shot in overtime, while taking three of their own, including the game winner by Grayek.
Pioneer keeper
Dakota Penquite (Blanchester, Ohio/Blanchester) went the distance in goal to notch his first clean sheet of the season. Penquite recorded a pair of saves in the shutout. Andrew McIlvoy played the entire game in goal for the Cardinals and made one save in the loss.
Marietta travels to Heidelberg University on Sunday (March 21) for a 2 p.m. match.
