Men's Soccer blanks Heidelberg

3/21/2021 11:50:00 PM

Box Score TIFFIN, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team stayed undefeated on the season with a dominating 4-0 win at Heidelberg University Sunday (March 21) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 3-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Heidelberg falls to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the OAC.

"The longest road trip of the year presents challenges in itself but I give the boys credit as we put them under pressure early and were rewarded with Rob's (Phillips) goal," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said.  "We have yet to put a full 90 minutes together but we have seen glimpses of what we can be. No one is satisfied with our start. We need to keep doing the things that allow us to keep playing and improve what we do on the field."

Marietta wasted little time jumping on top. Robert Phillips (Elkins, W.Va./Aquinas Academy (Pa.)) scored an unassisted goal just over three minutes into the match. The Pioneers added two more goals in the first half putting the Student Princes on their heels.

In the 22nd minutes, Reggie Grayek (Shavertown, Pa./Wyoming Seminary College Prep.) took a pass from Blake Holtman (Milford, Ohio/Milford) and beat the Heidelberg keeper for Marietta's second goals. 12 minutes later Austin Hilt (Lynchburg, Ohio/Lynchburg-Clay) made it 3-0 with an unassisted goal.

Any hopes of a Heidelberg comeback were dashed when Jovonni Auddino (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville North) found the back of the net for an unassisted goal in the 66th minute.

Ryan Riccillo (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) went the distance in goal for the Pioneers recording the first clean sheet of his young career. Ricccillo made two saves in the match.

Ben Patrizi started in goal for the Student Princes and allowed four goals, while making four saves in 82 minutes of action. Thomas Abraham played the final eight minutes without a save.

Marietta outshot Heidelberg 14-6 for the match, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. The Pioneers took five corners to just a pair for Heidelberg.

Marietta hosts Capital University on Thursday (March 25) for a 7 p.m. match.
