ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader from Marietta College Saturday (March 13) afternoon. The Purple Raiders posted identical 10-2 wins over the Pioneers in both games of the twin bill winning game one in five innings and game two in six innings.
Mount Union improves to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in OAC games. Marietta falls to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the OAC.
The Pioneers grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first game when
Kylie Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) led off the game with a double and then moved to third base on a passed ball.
Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) followed with an RBI single up the middle plating Daugherty.
Mount Union responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and never trailed again. The Purple Raiders got singles from its first three hitters and then Maggie Dominick smacked a three-run home run for a 4-1 lead.
Taylor Watts (Galloway, Ohio/West Jefferson) reached on a one-out double in the third inning. She moved to third on a single by Daugherty and then scored on an error by the Raider shortstop.
Mount Union plated a run in the second and another in third. The Purple Raiders put the game away with four more runs in the home half of the fourth inning.
Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) (0-1) started in the circle for the Pioneers and took the loss. She worked 1.1 innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits. She walked one.
Hannah Richardson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) and
Ashton Helmke (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) each threw in relief for the Pioneers.
Cheyanne Bosse (2-0) went the distance for the win. She threw 5.0 innings and allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Daugherty led the Pioneer offense going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Kirk was 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Watts went 1-for-2 with one run scored.
Game two started in a similar fashion with Marietta scoring one run in the top of the first.
Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) reached on a walk with two outs.
Anna Swierczewski (Natrona Heights, Pa./Saint Joseph) followed with a double driving in Kazmirski.
Mount Union plated three runs in the bottom of the first and then added one run in the second, fourth and fifth innings. The Purple Raiders scored four in the bottom of the sixth for the 10-2 win.
Kazmirski (0-1) started and took the loss for Marietta. She tossed 4.0 innings and was charged with five runs, three earned, on seven hits. She walked one and struck out two.
Sarah Keating (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
Peyton Morrison (3-0) got the complete game win. Morrison allowed two runs on three hits. She walked four and struck out seven.
Swierczewski was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead the Pioneer offense.
Marietta hosts Mount Union Sunday (March 14). First pitch for the OAC doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
