Softball drops pair to Mount Union

MARIETTA, Ohio — The University of Mount Union defeated Marietta College by the scores of 9-1 and 7-6 Sunday (March 14) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference softball action. The Purple Raiders improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the OAC after sweeping the four-game series from the Pioneers. Marietta falls to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Mount Union scored four runs in the top of the first inning of game one and never trailed. The Purple Raiders added two runs in the third, one in the fifth and two more in the seventh for the 9-1 win.

Marietta's lone run came in the bottom of second inning when Kylie Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) drew a bases loaded walk. Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) led off the inning with a walk and then Hannah Richardson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) was hit by a pitch.

Kaitlyn Carpenter (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) followed with a base hit bunt to load the bases. Mount Union pitcher Alyssa Rose struck out the next two batters before walking Daugherty. Carpenter led the Pioneer offense in game with a pair of singles.

Rose (1-1) got the win after tossing 6.0 strong innings. She gave up one run on four hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts. Megan Zody allowed one hit in an inning of relief.

Ashton Helmke (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) (0-1) started and took the loss for the Pioneers. She threw 4.2 innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits with two walks and one strikeout. Emily Callam (Greenville, Ind./Corydon Central) worked the final 2.1 innings and was charged with two runs on three hits.

In the nightcap Mount Union scored a run in the top of the seventh to escape with a 7-6 win. Marietta, trailing 6-2, plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game. Three Purple Raider errors aided the Pioneer rally. Freshman Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) delivered the big hit driving in the final two runs with a single up the middle.

Grace Heath led off the top of the seventh for the Purple Raiders and reached on a single up the middle. Maddie Pidgeon moved Heath into scoring position when she grounded out to first. A deep fly out to right field off the bat of Maggie Dominick allowed Heath to tag and move over to third base. Allie Goldy followed with a two-out, RBI single scoring Heath with the go ahead run.

Kazmirski (0-2) was tagged with the loss. Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) started in the circle and worked 4.1 innings. She allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits. Sarah Keating (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) came on in the fifth and threw 1.1 innings giving up two runs on three hits. Kazmirski pitched the final 1.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits.

Peyton Morrison started for Mount Union and threw 4.0 innings giving up two runs on three hits with three walks and striking out five. Cheyanne Bosse (3-0) got the win after allowing four unearned runs on four hits in 3.0 innings of work.

Kazmirski went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in to lead the Pioneer offense.

Marietta hosts Ohio Northern next Saturday (March 20) for an OAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
