MARIETTA, Ohio – Wabash earned a 98-90 win over 13th ranked Emory on Saturday (Nov. 20) evening on day two of the Great Lakes Invitational hosted by Marietta College. Wabash Head Coach Kyle Brumett earned his 100th win with the victory over the Eagles.
Coach Brumett said, "It was a crazy game. I got a lot of respect for Emory, they have a lot of great players. Both teams knew how hard it would be to escape with a win. We have a lot of things to clean up but leaving here with a win means a lot to our program."
Wabash scored the first four points of the game, and continued to play well and built a 10-4 edge. The early Little Giants lead was sparked by six points from Ahmoni Jones. Wabash continued its strong start and held a 25-15 edge, behind an Avery Beaver three pointer, with just over 12 minutes to play in the half.
Over the next three minutes of action the Little Giants outscored Emory, 10-5, to lead 35-20 with just under nine minutes to play in the half. Three-point shooting was at a premium during the span as Beaver and Vinny Buccilla hit for Wabash and Romin Williams connected for the Eagles.
Over the final eight minutes of the half, Emory outscored Wabash 22-1, which trimmed the Little Giants advantage to 52-42. Logan Shanahan led the way for the Eagles with eight points during that span.
Emory opened the second half on a 7-3 run that cut the lead to 55-49, three minutes into the half. Matthew Schner led the run with four of the seven points.
Emory Head Coach Jordan Zimmerman said, "This team has tremendous growth potential, maybe the most potential since I have been at Emory. We talk all the time we need to have a calm confidence, but play with urgency. We need to start playing like that."
The middle of the second half was a back and forth battle with Wabash out-scoring the Eagles 18-18 to hold a 73-67 edge with just under 10 minutes to play in the game. Tyler Watson led the way for the Little Giants with eight points, and Shanahan had six for Emory during the seven-minute span.
Wabash never allowed the Eagles to get within striking distance, and the Little Giants won the game 98-90.
