Women’s Basketball victorious over Saint Vincent

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team earned a 69-53 win over Saint Vincent College on Wednesday (Nov. 17) evening inside Ban Johnson Arena.  With the win the Pioneers improve to 3-0 on the season and with the loss the Bearcats fall to 1-1 overall.

"I am really proud of how our team stayed composed when Saint Vincent was in their zone.  We haven't been zoned yet this year, and I thought we responded really well in the second half when we got the ball moving," said Head Coach Kole Vivian.  "With the exception of fouling to much we did a nice job on defense making them earn their points."

Saint Vincent scored the opening basket of the game, but Marietta answered with five straight points to lead 5-2 three minutes into the game.  The Pioneer points were scored by a three from Hannah Schill (Rootstown, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) and a jumper from Olivia Gribble (Irwin, Pa./Norwin).  The Bearcats answered with an 8-0 run to regain a 10-5 edge, with just over three minutes to play in the quarter.  Marietta halted the run on a three from Jill Congrove (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm).  The Pioneers tied the game at 10-10 on a layup from Camille Cummins (MIddlefield, Ohio/Cardinal)Erin Hahn (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) hit a foul shot with four seconds left in the quarter and Marietta led 11-10 to enter the second quarter.

The Pioneers opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 18-12.  The run was sparked by four points from Hahn, and capped by a three from Schill.  The run forced a Saint Vincent timeout.  Out of the break, the teams traded baskets through the middle of the quarter, and Marietta maintained a 23-18 edge, with just under four minutes to play in the half.  Later in the quarter, the Pioneers scored a quick five unanswered points to lead 28-19, behind a three from Kate Liston (Little Hocking, Ohio/Warren Local) and a layup from Makenzie Wilson (Wapakoneta, Ohio/Wapakoneta).  Marietta hit a three as time expired as Ally Grake (Morrow, Ohio/Little Miami) hit a three to lead 31-22, at the intermission.

After the Pioneers held a 38-29 advantage, the Bearcats went on a 7-0 run to trim the Marietta lead to 38-33.  The Pioneers halted the run on a layup from Hahn, with six minutes to play in the third quarter.  The teams battled for the remainder of the third quarter, but a three from Gribble put Marietta on top 47-37, as time expired in the third quarter.

The Pioneers outscored Saint Vincent 6-3 over the first three minutes of play in the final frame.  Schill, Hahn, and Wilson all scored for Marietta to open the quarter, and put the Pioneers up 53-40.  Later in the quarter, a 9-0 run by Marietta opened up a 64-43 edge, with four minutes to play in the game.  The run was capped by a three from Liston.  The Pioneers were able to close the game and a late three from Adi Hill (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) gave Marietta a 69-53 win.
