DELAWARE, Ohio – Marietta College women's basketball team improved to 4-0 with a 66-62 road win over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday (Nov. 20) afternoon.
"Today was a really hard fought game against a really talented team on the road," said Head Coach
Kole Vivian. "We didn't shoot it very well and turned it over more than we have this year. Our defense and our depth made a huge impact, as we got deeper in the game."
Marietta opened the game with four consecutive points, behind shots from
Hannah Schill (Rootstown, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban), and
Erin Hahn (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville). Ohio Wesleyan responded with seven straight points to take a 7-4 edge with just under six minutes to play in the first quarter. The Pioneers halted the run with a jumper from
Jill Congrove (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm), and regained a 8-7 edge behind a layup from
Devin Hefner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South). Marietta continued to play well and back to back layups from
Kate Liston (Little Hocking, Ohio/Warren Local) and Congrove pushed the lead to 12-7, with two and a half minutes to play in the quarter. The Pioneers held a 14-9 advantage to enter the second quarter.
After Marietta led, 17-12 behind a foul shot from
Camille Cummins (MIddlefield, Ohio/Cardinal), the Battling Bishops went on an 11-2 run that saw them take a 23-19 edge, with four minutes to play in the half. The Pioneers battled back to trim the lead to 25-24 behind an old fashioned three-point play from Liston. Ohio Wesleyan answered with a 9-2 run, but
Ally Grake (Morrow, Ohio/Little Miami) made a layup at the buzzer to make the score 34-28 at the intermission, in favor of the Battling Bishops.
Marietta opened the third quarter on a 6-0 to tie the game at 34 points apiece. All six Pioneer points were scored by Mackenzie Wilson. The Pioneers continued to play well and 42-39 lead, behind a three-point play from
Kelly Levering (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty). Later in the quarter, Marietta ended the third on a 5-0 run to lead 52-46.
The fourth quarter was a back and forth battle for the entire frame. The Pioneers were able to hold the Battling Bishops at bay for a majority of the fourth quarter. The closest Ohio Wesleyan was able to get was 65-62 with eight seconds to play in the game. With six seconds remaining in the game Hefner was able to knock down a foul shot to put the game away, and give Marietta a 66-62 win.
The Pioneers were led by Hahn, she had a double-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks in the game. Wilson also notched a double-double with a career high 12 points and 10 rebounds in the game. Levering provided a spark. Off the bench with 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists in the game.
"To have four wins against teams predicted to be at the top of their leagues. So far feels really good," concluded Coach Vivian.
Marietta will return to the court Tuesday (Nov. 30) when they travel to take on Case Western, with tip off scheduled for 6 p.m.
