Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball earns road win at Washington and Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Marietta College women's basketball team earned a 65-52 road win at Washington and Jefferson on Saturday (Nov. 13) evening.  With the win the Pioneers improve to 2-0 overall, and with the loss the Presidents fall to 0-1 overall.

"When the second half started we went on a big run, but they answered it, and the crowd was awesome for them," said Head Coach Kole Vivian.  "We can take a lot from winning this close game down the stretch on the road."

Marietta scored the first four points of the game to lead, 4-0 behind a foul shot from Hannah Schill (Rootstown, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) and a three from Olivia Gribble (Irwin, Pa./Norwin), just over a minute into the game.  The teams traded buckets through the middle of the quarter and the Pioneers held an 11-7 edge.  Marietta ended the first quarter on a 9-2 run to hold a 20-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The run was sparked by four points from Kelly Levering (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) and capped by a Gribble three with five seconds remaining in the quarter.

Washington and Jefferson opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run to trim the Pioneers advantage to 22-17, a minute and a half into the second quarter.  Marietta halted the run with a layup from Devin Hefner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South), and the Pioneers held a 24-19 edge when the Presidents took a timeout with five minutes to play in the half.  Out of the break, Marietta closed the half on an 8-0 run to lead 32-19 at the intermission.  The run was well rounded as Mackenzie Wilson, Ally Grake (Morrow, Ohio/Little Miami), and Schill all scored.  The Pioneers did not allow Washington and Jefferson to score in the final six minutes of the second quarter.

Marietta extended its lead to 39-19, as they opened the third quarter on 7-0 run that spanned two minutes of play.  The run was sparked by four points from Schill, and three points from Erin Hahn (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville).  Later in the quarter, an 8-0 Presidents run made the score 39-27, with four minutes to play in the quarter, which forced a Pioneer timeout.  Out of the timeout, the teams battled for the remainder of the quarter, and a late three from Jill Congrove (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) helped put Marietta on top 45-32 to enter the final frame.

Washington and Jefferson opened the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run that trimmed the Pioneers lead to 47-43, which forced a Marietta timeout with six minutes to play in the game.  Out of the timeout, the Presidents continued to play well and cut the Pioneers edge to 49-48.  Marietta regained the momentum behind Hahn.  Hahn took over the game in the final four minutes and scored 10 straight points to give the Pioneers a 59-48 advantage.  Marietta closed out the game and won 65-52.

The Pioneers were led by Hahn, she had a game high 15 points, and pulled down seven rebounds.  Schill had 13 points, and led the team in steals with three.  Gribble added to the offense with 11 points.

Marietta will return to the court Wednesday (Nov. 17) when they host St. Vincent, with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m.
