Volleyball drops road contest at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team was defeated 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-14) on the road at Mount Union on Wednesday (Oct. 20) evening.  With the loss the Pioneers are now 5-15 overall and 2-4 in Ohio Athletic Conference play and with the win the Purple Raiders improve to 17-5 overall and 5-1 in the OAC.  
 
Marietta held a 5-2 lead to open the first set.  The early offense came from back to back kills from Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington), and pair of service aces from Riley Hohman (Copley, Ohio/Copley).  Mount Union battled back to tie the set at, 5-5.  The Purple Raiders continued to play well and led 11-8.  After Mount Union led 17-12, the Pioneers rattled off three straight points with kills by Fellers, and Ella Boyer (Bay Village, Ohio/Saint Joseph Academy).  The Purple Raiders scored eight of the final 10 points to win the set, 25-17.    
 
Mount Union jumped out to a 7-2 edge early in the second frame.  The Marietta points came on kills by Mia Silva (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) and Boyer.  The Purple Raiders continued to play well and held a 14-4 advantage.  The Pioneers answered with a 7-1 run to trim the lead to 15-10.  The run was sparked by a kill from Lauren Radalia (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) and a service ace from Ashley Ward (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson).  Mount Union closed the set on a 10-3 run and won, 25-13.
 
The third set was tight early as it remained deadlocked at 5-5.  The early Marietta offense came from Silva, Boyer, and Becca Phelps (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive).  After the set was tied 8-8, The Purple Raiders scored three consecutive points to lead, 11-8 which forced a Pioneers timeout.  Out of the break, Mount Union scored six straight points to hold a 17-8 edge.  The teams traded points for the remainder of the final frame, and the Purple Raiders won 25-14.

The Pioneer offense was led by Boyer, she had seven kills in the match, and tallied a pair of blocks.  Makayla Schilling (Blacklick, Ohio/Licking Heights) led the defensive effort with 17 digs in the match.  

Marietta will return to the court Saturday (Oct. 23) when they travel to take on John Carroll, with the match scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
