UNIVERSITY HTS., Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team was defeated by John Carroll 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-15) on Saturday (Oct. 23) afternoon inside the DeCarlo Varsity Center. With the loss the Pioneers are now 5-16 overall and 2-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the win the Blue Streaks are now 12-14 overall and 3-4 in OAC play.
The first set was close early, as the set remained deadlocked at 7-7. The Marietta points came from kills by
Lauren Radalia (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) and
Becca Phelps (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive). John Carroll was able take a 12-7 lead behind a 5-0 run. Three straight points by the Pioneers trimmed the lead to 12-10 behind a kill from
Ella Boyer (Bay Village, Ohio/Saint Joseph Academy). The Blue Streaks closed the set by outscoring the Pioneers 13-8, and took the first frame, 25-18.
The second set was a back and forth battle as the set was tied at 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5. The Marietta offense was sparked by kills from
Mia Silva (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton), Phelps, and Boyer. The Pioneers were able to grab a 7-5 edge behind a kill from Silva. John Carroll answered with five of the next six points to lead 11-8. The Blue Streaks continued to play well and extended their lead to 16-10. Marietta battled with three points late in the set to make the score 23-18, behind a kill from Phelps and a service ace from Silva. John Carroll scored the final two points of the set, and won 25-18.
The third set was tied at 4-4 before the Blue Streaks scored four straight points to lead 8-4. After John Carroll led 12-6, three straight points from the Pioneers mad the score 12-9. The run was sparked by a kill from Phelps and Boyer. Marietta continued to battle back and a service ace from
Jenna Szabelski (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) trimmed the lead to 13-11. John Carroll scored five of the next six points to lead 18-12. The Blue Streaks closed out the final set, and won 25-15.
The Pioneer offense was led by Phelps, she had 11 kills, and four total blocks in the match. Silva played a well-rounded game with 12 digs, and eight kills in the match.
Makayla Schilling (Blacklick, Ohio/Licking Heights) led the defensive effort with 14 digs in the match.
Marietta will return to the court Wednesday (Oct. 27) when they host Muskingum, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
