Women’s Lacrosse crushes Thiel

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team earned a convincing 19-5 victory over Thiel College on Wednesday (March. 4) afternoon on Marietta Field.  The win improves the Pioneers record to 3-1 overall and the loss drops the Tomcats to 1-4 on the season.

The 19 goals set a program record for goals in a game for the Marietta College women's lacrosse program.

"Great team win tonight.  The team did a great job executing our game plan," said Head Coach Malory Nadrah.  "We are still struggling to hit our full potential, but it leaves something for us to keep working toward."

The Pioneers came out ready to play as they rattled off the first 10 goals of the game over a span of 17 minutes.  Mackenzie Dyott (Easton, Md./Easton) led the early offense as she scored four of the 10 Marietta goals.  Natalie Cocco (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) added to the attack with a pair of goals, and Kayla Kearns (Preston, Md./Easton), Kelsey Burns (Medina, Ohio/Medina), and Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) tacked on the other goals.  Lindy Brobeck (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington), Megan Marshall (Naples, Fla./Estero), and Megan McGriff (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek) had assists during the run.  After a Tomcats goal, the Pioneers scored three consecutive goals, and led 13-1 with a minute to play in the half.  The Marietta goals were scored by Cocco, McGriff, and Dyott, with an assist by Marshall.  Thiel scored the final goal of the half, but the Pioneers led 13-2 at the intermission.

Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill./Barrington) played the first half in goal for the Pioneers, she faced 12 shots, seven of which were on goal, and made five saves.

Marietta carried its momentum over to the second half, when they scored three unanswered goals over a span of eight minutes to lead, 16-2.  Emily Etheridge (Harrisville, R.I./Burrillville), Burns, and Rachel Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity) scored the goals with assists by Carlee Kernodle (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park) and Burns.  The Tomcats scored two of the next three goals, but the Pioneers held a 17-4 advantage with just over 13 minutes to play in the game.  The Marietta goal was scored by Casey Roeder (Milford, Ohio/Milford).  The Pioneers scored the next two goals to extend their lead to 19-4 with 10 minutes to play in the game.  The Marietta goals were scored by Jamie Denzer (Murrysville, Pa./Plum Senior) and McGriff.  Thiel scored the final goal of the game but the Pioneers won, 19-5.

The Pioneers were led by Dyott as she had a game high five goals, and picked up two ground balls.  Cocco and McGriff each pitched in with three goals and an assist in the game.  McGriff had a team high four draw controls.  The Marietta defense was led by Zionne Newkirk (Youngstown, Ohio/Mooney) as she caused a game high three turnovers.

"Mackenzie, Natalie, and Megan all had a great game tonight, they are all getting better and better each game.  Zionne played a huge role for us on the defensive end and helped keep the momentum in our direction," said Coach Nadrah.  "Our draw team had a good night, we're starting to work well with each other and be more aggressive."

Lauren Redfern (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) played the second half in goal for Marietta, she faced nine shots, six of which were on goal, and made three saves.

"We're thrilled to be 3-1 at this point in the season.  Our program is improving and the team is doing a great job building this program the right way," concluded Coach Nadrah.
