MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team earned a 17-6 victory over Hiram College on Friday (Feb. 28) evening on Marietta Field. The win pushes the Pioneers record to 2-1 overall and the Terriers fall to 0-2 on the season.
"Although it wasn't the prettiest win, I am pleased with tonight's victory. Last year that game was a big loss, and one year later we have turned into a big win," said Head Coach
Malory Nadrah. "We're showing a lot of growth early in the season which is exciting. We are still having trouble hitting our full potential, but that leaves something to work towards."
Marietta jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when
Mackenzie Dyott (Easton, Md./Easton) scored an unassisted goal two minutes into the match. Twenty seconds later, the Pioneers doubled their lead when
Natalie Cocco (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) scored an unassisted goal. After a Hiram goal, Marietta responded with three consecutive goals to lead, 5-1 with 19 minutes to play in the half. The goals were scored by
Megan McGriff (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek),
Kayla Kearns (Preston, Md./Easton), and
Lindy Brobeck (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) had an assist. The Terriers scored two of the next three goals, but the Pioneers led, 6-3. The Marietta goal was scored by
Sophia Verona (Shinnston, W. Wa./Our Lady of Victory) off a feed from
Kelsey Burns (Medina, Ohio/Medina). The Pioneers closed out the half with five consecutive goals, and led 11-3 at the intermission. The Marietta goals were scored by Cocco, Burns, Verona, and Brobeck.
The Pioneers started the second half strong as they rattled off six unanswered goals over a span of 17 minutes of play, and led 17-3. The goals were scored by
Casey Roeder (Milford, Ohio/Milford),
Rachel Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity), Cocco,
Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), and Dyott. The Terriers scored the final three goals of the game, but the Pioneers won, 17-6.
Marietta was led by Cocco, she had four goals, a ground ball, and a caused turnover. Millheim pitched in with a pair of goals, and had team leading four draw controls. Roeder and Sivie tied for a team lead in caused turnovers with two apiece.
"Natalie has so much tenacity to get points on the board for us, great game for her tonight. Shelby also had some great goals and did really well on circle with Kelsey," concluded Coach Nadrah
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill./Barrington) played a majority of the game in goal, she faced 14 shots, 13 of which were on goal, and made 10 saves. Leers earned her second win of the season.
Marietta will return to the field Wednesday (Feb. 28) when they host Thiel College, with the game scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
