MARIETTA, Ohio — We are nearing the completion of our All-Decade Teams for Marietta College Men's Soccer with today's announcement of the 2000-09 Offensive Player of the Decade. The honor goes to Marcos Vaca, class of 2005.
The Houston, Texas native was recruited as part of the Coach of the Decade Patrick Holguin's 2001 class and made a quick impact on the '01 team from his midfield position scoring five goals and four assists for 14 points, tops on the team. For his efforts, Marcos received All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) honors, the only Pioneer to be named in that season.
In his sophomore season the team took off and matched the all-time program record for wins with a 12-5-1 record and Marcos was the linchpin in the midfield for that side picking up seven assists along with his three goals for a team leading 13 points. Vaca was once again the only Pioneer to be named All-OAC for his efforts.
In his junior season Marcos matched his career high in points with 14 on six goals and two assists. For the third season in a row Vaca was the team's leading scorer and was honored once again with All-OAC accolades. In his final season the remnants of Hurricane Ivan blew thru Marietta and wiped out two weeks' worth of games so all the stats were off a bit as he had four goals and eight points. Despite the reduction in games Marcos was named All-OAC for his fourth year in a row.
Described by his teammates as the tactical technician in the midfield, Vaca is just one of six players in the history of the program to receive All-OAC honors in all four of his years. He did it with two second team awards and two first team awards. Next week we wrap up this celebration of Marietta College Men's Soccer with the 2010-19 decade announcements.
