Women’s Basketball victorious over Mount Union

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team earned an 80-72 win over Ohio Athletic Conference opponent the University of Mount Union inside Ban Johnson Arena on Wednesday (Jan. 22) evening.  The win improves the Pioneers to 8-8 overall and 4-5 in the OAC, and the Purple Raiders fall to 9-7 overall and 3-6 in OAC play.

"Great team effort tonight.  We had a goal of contesting their shots and they didn't really get very many clean ones," said Head Coach Kole Vivian.  "Really happy with how our team handled pressure, especially Bailee, and Hahn was obviously huge off the bench."

Mount Union opened the game with a back to back buckets to notch and early 5-0 lead.  The Pioneers got on the scoreboard when Devin Hefner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) made a layup.  The Pioneers took a 7-5 advantage behind a layup from Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye), and a three from Marlo Taylor (Kimbolton, Ohio/Cambridge) four minutes into the game.  Marietta maintained its two point lead and entered the second quarter ahead, 17-15.

The second quarter opened as a back and forth battle, as the lead changed hands four times, but the Pioneers held a 24-22 edge behind a three pointer from Taylor four minutes into the second quarter.  Marietta did not surrender the lead for the remainder of the half, and held a 34-30 edge at the intermission.  The Pioneer second quarter offense was led by Erin Hahn (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) as she had six second quarter points.

The Purple Raiders scored the opening basket of the third quarter, but Marietta answered with a 7-0 run, to take a 41-32 lead early in the quarter.  The run was sparked by a layup from Enochs, and capped by a three from Bailee Brooks (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls).  The Pioneers closed out the quarter and led, 61-47 to enter the final frame.

Midway through the fourth quarter Mount Union went on an 11-0 run to trim the Marietta lead to 72-65, with just over two minutes to play in the game.  The Purple Raiders got as close 76-70 with under a minute to play in the game.  Marietta closed out the game at the foul line when Hefner and Brooks each knocked down a pair of foul shots, and the Pioneers won 80-72.

The Pioneers were led by Hahn, as she had a career high 16 points, and pulled down seven rebounds.  Enochs added 15 points, and had a game high three blocks.  Brooks pitched in with 12 points, and had a career high nine rebounds.

Marietta will return to the court Saturday (Jan. 25) when they travel to take on 11th ranked  Baldwin Wallace University, with tip off scheduled for 3 p.m.
