BEREA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team was defeated 89-60 by 11th ranked Baldwin Wallace University inside Ursprung Gymnasium on Saturday (Jan. 25) afternoon. Win the win the Yellow Jackets improve to 15-2 overall and 8-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, and the Pioneers fall to 8-9 overall and 4-6 in OAC action.
Baldwin Wallace jumped out to an early lead as they opened the game on 15-3 run through the first five minutes of play. The Pioneer points were scored by
Devin Hefner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South), and
Camille Cummins (MIddlefield, Ohio/Cardinal). The Yellow Jackets stretched out a 24-3 edge, but Marietta ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to trim the lead to 24-10. The run was sparked by an
Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) jumper and capped by a three from
Bailee Brooks (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls).
The Pioneers continued to battled, and cut the lead to 24-15 to open the second quarter. Marietta scored the first five points of the quarter with a layup from Enochs, and a three pointer from
Marlo Taylor (Kimbolton, Ohio/Cambridge). Baldwin Wallace answered with a 10-2 run that saw them stretch their lead to 34-17. The Yellow Jackets continued to play well and took a 51-30 edge into the intermission.
The teams swapped buckets to open the third quarter and Baldwin Wallace maintained a 61-38 edge, with just over five minutes to play in the quarter. The early third quarter Pioneers offense was led by six points from Enochs. Late in the third quarter a 9-2 Yellow Jackets run gave them a 73-42 edge. Marietta scored the final points of the third quarter when Enochs knocked down a pair of fouls shots, and the Pioneers trailed 73-44.
Marietta tried to notch a couple of runs late in the fourth quarter, but the Yellow Jackets always had an answer. Baldwin Wallace maintained its lead and won the game, 89-60.
The Pioneers were led by Hefner as she led all scorers with 17 points, and pulled down seven rebounds. Enochs pitched in with 13 points and had three rebounds. Taylor added 10 point, and tallied a block in the game.
Marietta will return to the hardwood Wednesday (Jan. 29) when they host Otterbein University, with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m.
