ADA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team was defeated by Ohio Northern University, 84-56 on Saturday (Jan. 18) afternoon. The loss drops the Pioneers record to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and the win improves the Polar Bears record to 11- 4 overall and 5-3 in OAC action.
Ohio Northern opened the first quarter with the first six points of the game. Marietta answered back quickly with a 9-0 run, that saw them take a 9-6 edge four minutes of the game. The Pioneer points were scored by
Camille Cummins (MIddlefield, Ohio/Cardinal),
Marlo Taylor (Kimbolton, Ohio/Cambridge), and
Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye). The Polar Bears responded with an 11-0 run that saw them regain a 17-9 advantage, with four minutes to play in the opening quarter. Ohio Northern maintained its advantage and entered the second ahead, 21-13.
The teams swapped baskets to open the second quarter, and the Polar Bears held a 29-22 lead, midway through the quarter. The early second quarter offense for Marietta was led by
Erin Hahn (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville), and
Luce Duritza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area). A 10-2 run from Ohio Northern stretched their lead to 40-24 with a minute to play in the half. The run was halted by a
Devin Hefner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) layup. The Pioneers trailed 45-26 at the intermission.
The Polar Bears opened the second half strong with a 12-3 run that spanned the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Marietta bucket was a three pointer from Enochs. The Pioneers tried to battle back into the game with a couple of runs, but Ohio Northern always had an answer. Marietta entered the final frame behind, 68-41.
The Pioneers scored the first four points of the final frame to cut into the Polar Bears edge. The points were scored by Taylor, and Hefner. Ohio Northern held on to their lead, and held an 81-51 edge with three minutes to play in the game. The Polar Bears closed out the game, and won 84-56.
Marietta was led by Enochs, as she had 11 points, pulled down six rebounds, and a had a pair of blocks in the game. Hefner added 10 points, and a pair of rebounds in the game. Hahn and Taylor each scored eight points. The eight points by Hahn is a career high.
The Pioneers will return to the hardwood Wednesday (Jan. 22) when they host Mount Union, with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m.
