TIFFIN, Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team earned an Ohio Athletic Conference win on the road against Heidelberg, 67-56, on Saturday (Jan. 11) afternoon. The win improves the Pioneers record to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in the OAC and with the loss the Student Princes fall to 5-8 overall and 1-5 in OAC action.
"Our first half was what Pioneer basketball is all about. We moved the ball, controlled the boards, and talked on both sides of the ball," said Head Coach
Kole Vivian. "Heidelberg made a run in the second half because they are a good team, and we just grinded out the last five minutes."
Marietta opened the game on a quick 8-0 run, to hold an 8-0 lead at the 7:22 minute mark of the opening quarter. The Pioneers run was highlighted by four points from
Camille Cummins (MIddlefield, Ohio/Cardinal). Marietta continued to play well in the first quarter and extended their lead throughout the opening frame. The Pioneers entered the second quarter ahead, 25-13. Cummins led the offense with six points, and
Bailee Brooks (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls),
Devin Hefner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South), and
Haley Ross (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) added three points.
Marietta carried its momentum over to the second quarter, and outscored Heidelberg, 12-6 through the first five minutes of the second quarter. The Pioneer offense was sparked by Hefner, and
Erin Hahn (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) to put Marietta on top 37-19. The Pioneers scored the final six points of the half, and entered the intermission ahead, 43-19. Marietta outscored Heidelberg 18-6 in the second quarter.
Early in the third quarter the Student Princes opened up a 12-2 run that trimmed the Pioneers advantage to 49-33. Marietta halted the run with a jumper by Hefner at the 5:29 minute mark of the third quarter. Heidelberg continued to battle back into the game, but the Pioneers lead 59-44 to enter the final frame.
The Student Princes opened the fourth quarter on a quick 5-0 run to cut the Marietta edge to 59-49 with eight minutes to play in the game. The Pioneers answered back with a 6-0 run of their own, and led 65-49 with six minutes to play in the game. The run was sparked by
Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye), and capped by a jumper from
Marlo Taylor (Kimbolton, Ohio/Cambridge). Marietta closed out the game over the final six minutes and won the game, 67-56.
The Pioneers were led by Enochs, she had a game high 16 points, pulled down seven rebounds, and had a pair of blocks in the game. Hefner added 14 points in the game and had five rebounds. Cummins also finished the game in double figures with 12 points. Hahn had a career and game high nine rebounds.
Marietta will return to the court Wednesday (Jan. 15) when they host Capital University, with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m.
