MARIETTA, Ohio - The Marietta College women's soccer team secured its second straight shutout with a 1-0 victory over Waynesburg University on Saturday (Sept. 7) evening on Marietta Field. The win improves to the Pioneers record to 2-1 on the season.
Head Coach
Sean Kaighin said, "These girls are earning every little victory when the opportunity arises. We've asked so much of them, and they have consistently stepped up to the challenge. First home win for this administration as well! Now, on to the next one."
The first half was a scoreless battle between the Pioneers and Jackets. Marietta notched seven first half shots, and blanked the Waynesburg offense as they did not register a shot.
Jorden Stuart (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) and
Amanda Augustyniak (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) tallied the shots on goal for the Pioneers. The teams were even in the corner kick battle, as they each had two.
Marietta wasted little time to break the scoring drought in the second half. The Pioneers goal came in the 53rd minute of the match when
Natalie Baker (Dover, Ohio/Dover) scored off a cross from
Jasmine Hauser (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty). The goal by Baker is the first of her career, and Hauser's assist is the first of her career.
The Pioneers back line of Augustyniak, Stuart,
Embrey Roberts (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), and
Amelia Thompson (New Castle, United Kingdom/Monkseaton) made the lone goal hold up to secure the Marietta victory. The back line was anchored by goalie
Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer). Conkle faced six shots, four of which were on goal, and made four saves.
Marietta will be back in action Wednesday (Sept. 11) when they travel to take on Earlham with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
