FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Marietta College women's soccer team was defeated on the road by Earlham College 2-1 on Wednesday (Sept. 11) afternoon. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 2-2 overall on the season and the Quakers improve to 4-1 overall.
Head Coach
Sean Kaighin said, "We're disappointed in our performance, and the overall result. Today, we were not the better team. Adversity is what makes us better though, and it drives us to find ways to improve. We'll bounce back for Saturday."
The first half was a defensive battle as neither team was able to get on the scoreboard. Marietta and Earlham each tallied four first half shots. The Pioneers best chance to score came when
France Moise (Naples, Fla./Naples) fired a shot which required a save from the goalie.
Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) played a solid half in the net for Marietta, as she notched a pair of saves in the half to keep the game tied 0-0 at the intermission.
After a scoreless first half the second half saw three goals scored. The Quakers opened the scoring in the 68th minute of the game when Eva Lyon scored off an assist from Hannah Walhausser. Five minutes later Earlham grabbed a 2-0 advantage when Tess Cunningham found the back of the net.
The Pioneers responded less than a minute later to cut the Quakers edge to 2-1. The Marietta goal was scored by Moise off of a penalty kick. The goal is the first of the season for Moise. The Pioneers battled for the remainder of the game but fell, 2-1.
Marietta will return to the field Saturday (Sept. 14) when they travel to take on Oberlin College, with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
