Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pioneers shutout Allegheny

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's soccer team earned its first shutout of the season with a convincing 3-0 win over Allegheny College on Saturday (Sept. 7) on Marietta Field.  The Pioneers win improves them to 2-2 on the season while the Gators fall to 0-4.

"While not a complete performance it was the most complete performance of the young season.   We stressed before the game to enjoy the game and play with a smile," said head coach Joe Bergin.  "Way easier to do when we get two early goals. Now we need to spend the week getting ready for the next phase of the season."

Marietta opened the scoring in the 5th minute when Gavin Long (Surrey, United Kingdom/John Fisher School) scored his first goal of the season.  Long scored on a shot from 25 yards out that redirected off the far post to find the back of the net.  10 minutes later Long scored his second goal of the game and put the Pioneers on top 2-0.  Marietta closed out the half and entered the intermission ahead, 2-0.

Marietta controlled the second half of the game.  In the 75th minute the Pioneers put the game away when Caden Ferguson (Mars, PA./Mars Area) found the back of the net for the first time in his career.

The back line of Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), Dave Beattie (Russell, Ohio/West Geauga), Elliot Britton (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire/John Hampden Grammar), and Colston Roades (Mount Orab, Ohio/Western Brown) secured the shutout.  Dakota Penquite (Blanchester, Ohio/Blanchester) was in goal for Marietta, he faced eight shots, four of which were on goal, and made four saves.

Marietta will return to the pitch Saturday (Sept. 14) when they travel to play Anderson University, with the game scheduled to kickoff at 12 p.m.
