ANDERSON, Indiana — After a scoreless first half, the flood gates opened in the second period as Anderson University defeated Marietta College by the score of 3-2 Saturday (Sept. 14) afternoon in men's soccer action. The Ravens improve to 3-3 on the season, while Marietta slips to 2-3 overall.
Marietta held the Ravens without a shot in the first 45 minutes but was unable to capitalize on its stellar defense to grab the lead. The Pioneers managed seven shots in the first half with two of them on goal. Anderson keeper Caleb Oliver had two saves to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
"The level of cruelty in the game continues to amaze me. We outshoot the other team by a wide margin yet we still lose," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "That being said, credit to Anderson as they deserved the result and we did not. Time is growing short to sort it out. OAC is coming and we just aren't there yet. As a group we need to look at everything we do and assess what is working and what isn't."
Anderson erupted for three straight goals in the second half. The Ravens got on the board in the 47th minute when Drew Sonnefeldt scored with an assist from R.J. Macomber. Race Williams and Daniel Collins each added an unassisted goal giving the Ravens a 3-0 lead in the 59th minute.
The Pioneers regrouped and
Matt Montgomery (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) scored his first goal of the season in the 73rd minute. The unassisted goal cut the Pioneer deficit to 3-1.
Gavin Long (Surrey, United Kingdom/John Fisher School) scored with an assist from
Dave Beattie (Russell, Ohio/West Geauga) with less than two minutes remaining in the match to get Marietta within a goal, 3-2. The goal was Long's third of the season, but was the Pioneers' final scoring opportunity of the match.
Oliver finished with 13 saves in goal for the Ravens.
Trevor Dykstra (Jamestown, N.Y./Falconer Central) went the full 90 minutes in net for the Pioneers and did not have any saves.
For the match, Marietta outshot the Ravens 24-8, including a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Pioneers were awarded eight corners, while Anderson had none.
After playing three of their first five matches on the road, Marietta returns home for a three-game home stand. The Pioneers host Kenyon College on Wednesday (Sept. 18) at 7:30 p.m.
