MARIETTA, Ohio — Kenyon College defeated Marietta College by the score of 2-0 Wednesday (Sept. 18) evening in men's soccer action. The Lords improve to 6-1 on the season, while the Pioneers slip to 2-4 overall.
Kenyon scored once in each half and then limited Marietta's scoring opportunities on defense. Keeper Ian McInturf posted six saves and the clean sheet for the Lords.
"While Kenyon was the overall better team, I felt we did enough to get a result. But once again finishing has let us down," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "Credit to our boys for creating the opportunities but at some point the Saran Wrap has to come off the goal. There is no time to dwell on the result as we have to get ready for a tough opponent Saturday."
Sam Carson tallied the game winner in the 38th minute. Sebastian Brylka's through ball found Carson on the left side of the six-yard box. Carson placed the ball inside the far post for his third goal of the season.
Mac Nardiello-Smith added an insurance goal for the Lords in the 86th minute. Nardiello-Smith's follow-up shot found the lower left corner of the net for his third goal of the season.
Marietta had a couple of chances to tie the game prior to Nardiello-Smith's goal, but the Kenyon defense kept the Pioneers off the board. Marietta got -back-to-back shots in the 57th minute from
Jovonni Auddino (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville North) and Austin Hildt and then
Robert Phillips (Elkins, W.Va./Aquinas Academy (Pa.)) scoring chance in the 71st minute was saved off the back line by a Kenyon defender.
Dakota Penquite (Blanchester, Ohio/Blanchester) went the distance in goal for the Pioneers and posted six saves. For the match, Kenyon outshot the Pioneers, 21-9, including an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. The Lords took 11 corners to just three for Marietta.
Marietta hosts Washington and Jefferson College on Saturday (Sept. 21). Kick-off is set for 4 p.m.
