LATROBE, Pa. – The Marietta College women's soccer team secured its first win under the direction of first year head coach
Sean Kaighin on Sunday (Sept. 1) afternoon, as they defeated Saint Vincent, 4-0. The Pioneers improve to 1-1 on the season, and the Bearcats fall to 0-2.
Coach Kaighin said, "The win we earned today is the result of a collaborative team effort. Everyone competed, everyone played, and everyone did their job. This is what we ask of our Pioneers: fight for a common cause and the results will show. I'm so proud of our team today."
Marietta wasted little time, as they scored in the second minute of the game.
Chloe Williams (Dresden, Ohio/Tri-Valley) gave the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage when she found the back of the net from 15 yards out, to notch her first goal of the season.
Williams tallied her second goal of the game, 15 minutes later when she dribbled past the goalkeeper and tapped it home from three yards out, to put Marietta on top 2-0. The Pioneers entered the intermission ahead 2-0. Marietta's defense did not allow a St. Vincent shot during the first 45 minutes of play.
The Pioneers added to their lead in the 60th minute when
McKenzie Dorr (Nashport, Ohio/Tri-Valley) scored an unassisted goal from 30 yards out, to make the score 3-0 in favor of Marietta. Three minutes later,
Kelsey Carver (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork) strengthened the Pioneers hold on the game, as she scored an unassisted goal from 14 yards out.
The back line of
Amanda Augustyniak (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central),
Embrey Roberts (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta),
Emma Luciano (Milford, Ohio/Milford), and
Jorden Stuart (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) completed the shutout to earn the 4-0 win over the Bearcats. The goalkeeper duo of
Katie Delaney (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) and
Karlee Bruns (Cambridge, Ohio/Cambridge) each played a half. Delaney started the game and did not face a shot, and Bruns played the second half and made a pair of saves.
Marietta will return to the field Saturday (Sept. 7) when they host Waynesburg University, with the game scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
