MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team dropped its season opener to the College of Wooster by the score of 1-0 Friday (August 30) under the lights at Marietta Field. The Fighting Scots scored the lone goal of the match in the first half and then relied on their defense for the shutout.
"Any loss is a disappointing result," Marietta head coach
Sean Kaighin said. "We certainly had our chances to put ourselves ahead in the match, but it's often a game of missed opportunities. We'll bounce back and turn our focus to the next match on Sunday."
Wooster's Mila Zunich found herself open on the right side of the six-yard box and fired a shot upper 90 inside the far post for the game winning goal. Zunich led the Scot attack with five shots on goal for the match.
With Zunich handling the offense, Wooster keeper Molly Hutter notched four saves and a clean sheet to open the 2019 season.
Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) posted 10 saves in goal for the Pioneers.
Marietta had four shots on goal with
Amanda Augustyniak (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central),
McKenzie Dorr (Nashport, Ohio/Tri-Valley),
Taylor Carr (Charleston, W.Va./St. Albans) and
Jasmine Hauser (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) had one each.
For the match, Wooster outshot the Pioneers, 17-7, including an 11-4 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had four corners.
