Women’s Lacrosse drops road contest at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team fell Saturday (April 6) to the University of Mount Union, 21-0.  With the win the Purple Raiders improve to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference action, and with the loss the Pioneers fall to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in OAC play.

Head Coach Malory Brunett said, "Our young team came into the match with a great mentality.  We fought, and we kept our composure the entire game.  For a young team, I am a very proud coach."

Mount Union grabbed an early lead in the opening minutes of the game.  The Purple Raiders continued their strong play and led, 16-0 at the intermission.  Marietta created opportunities to score in the first half, as Delaney Djuric (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) and Rachel Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity) had shots in the first half.  

Mount Union carried its momentum over to the second half as they scored five unanswered goals.  The Pioneers defense was able to hold the Purple Raiders scoreless for spans of nine and ten minute during the second half, but Marietta fell 21-0.  Sarah Stutler (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Acdemy) and Abbie Puchta (Blue Ash, Ohio/Loveland) each created chances for the Pioneers to score in the second half.  

The Marietta defense was led by Emma Purington (Columbus, Ohio/Hamilton Township) as she tied for a game high in caused turnovers with two, and picked up a pair of ground balls.  Djuric, and Lindsay Horton (Birmingham, Ala. /John Carroll Catholic) also caused turnovers in the game, and Horton had a game high four ground balls.  

"Lindsay played a terrific game, she came up with a lot of 50/50 balls and contributed many times in the transition.  Lauren Redfern (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) stepped up defensively, as she drew a few charge calls in the second half," concluded Coach Brunett.     

Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill. /Barrington) and Sam Mooney (New Cumberland, Pa. /Red Land) each played a half in net for the Pioneers, the duo faced 35 shots, 27 of which were on goal, and made six saves.  Leers notched five first half saves.    

Marietta will return to the field Wednesday (April 10) when they host Otterbein University, with the game scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
