MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team was defeated by Otterbein University, 15-1 Wednesday (April 10) on Marietta Field. With the win the Cardinals improve to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference action, and with the loss the Pioneers drop to 2-11 overall and 0-5 in OAC play.
Otterbein opened the game with eight straight goals, and took an 8-0 lead with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half. The Pioneers got on the scoreboard less than a minute later, when
Sarah Stutler (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Acdemy) found the back of the net on a free position shot, for her 13th goal of the season. The Cardinals tacked on the final goal of the half, and entered the intermission ahead, 9-1.
Otterbein carried its momentum over to the second half as they scored sixth second half goals, and won the game, 15-1. The Pioneers defense of
Taylor Carr (Charleston, W.Va./St. Albans),
Lindsay Horton (Birmingham, Ala. /John Carroll Catholic),
Emma Purington (Columbus, Ohio/Hamilton Township), and
Lauren Redfern (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) played solid second half defense, as they held the Cardinals scoreless for a 10 minute span in the second half.
Marietta was led by Stutler as she scored for the Pioneers. Defensively,
Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa. /Freedom) led the way, as she tied for game highs in groundballs and caused turnovers with five and two respectively. Purington added to the defensive effort with a pair of caused turnovers.
Delaney Djuric (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) tied for a game high in ground balls with five.
Faith Campbell (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills Senior ),
Carlee Kernodle (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park), and Horton all won a draw control for Marietta.
Sam Mooney (New Cumberland, Pa. /Red Land) and
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill. /Barrington) split time in goal for the Pioneers, the duo faced 34 shots, 24 of which were on goal, and made nine saves.
Marietta will return to the field Saturday (April 13th) when they travel to take on Ohio Northern University, with the game scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
