Women’s Lacrosse defeated by Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team was defeated by Ohio Athletic Conference foe, Ohio Northern University 18-4 on Saturday (April 13).  The win pushes the Polar Bears record to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the OAC, and the Pioneers drop to 2-12 overall and 0-6 in OAC play.   

Head Coach Malory Brunett said, "Today we did much better on the draw.  Shelby and Sarah are starting to become very competitive and successful against other teams draw personnel."

Ohio Northern opened the game with five straight goals, to lead 5-0 six minutes into the game.  The Marietta defense tightened and held the Polar Bears scoreless for the next 10 minutes of the game.  The Pioneers defense provided the time for back to back Marietta goals, to cut the Ohio Northern lead to 5-2.  Both Pioneer goals were scored by Rachel Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity), both goals were scored off free position shots.  

The Polar Bears were able to take a 7-2 advantage at the 11:23 minute mark as they scored two consecutive goals.  Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa. /Freedom) answered for Marietta when she scored an unassisted goal for her 20th goal of the season.  Ohio Northern ended the first half with three straight goals, and entered the intermission ahead, 10-3.  

After five minutes of scoreless second half action the Polar Bears tacked on a pair of goals, and stretched their lead to 12-3.  Four minutes later, the Pioneers answered when Sarah Stutler (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Acdemy) scored her 14th goal of the season off a free position shot.  Ohio Northern ended the game with six consecutive goals, and won the game 18-4.   

Marietta was led by Sivie as she had a pair of goals, and picked up a ground ball.  Millheim and Stutler eached pitched in a goal in the game.  Millheim also had a team high in ground balls and caused turnovers with four and two respectively.

The defense was helped by caused turnovers from Lauren Redfern (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook), Delaney Djuric (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), and Faith Campbell (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills Senior ).  "A few of our defensive players aided in the transition today and are starting to gain confidence in clearing the ball.  Lindsay Horton (Birmingham, Ala. /John Carroll Catholic), Emma Purington (Columbus, Ohio/Hamilton Township), and Taylor Carr (Charleston, W.Va./St. Albans) all helped in a clear up to the attacking end," added Coach Brunett.     

Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill. /Barrington) and Sam Mooney (New Cumberland, Pa. /Red Land) each played a half in goal for the Pioneers, the duo faced 42 shots, 30 of which were on goal, and made 12 saves.  "Both goalies had good games in net.  Maddie played well inside and outside of the crease.  Sam had a big eight saves in the second half, and had a 50 percent save percentage," concluded Coach Brunett.  

Marietta will return to the field Friday (April 19) when they host John Carroll University, with the game set to start at 3 p.m.
