MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team was defeated by John Carroll University, 21-4 on Friday (April 19) on Marietta Field. The win improves the Blue Streaks record to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference play and with the loss the Pioneers fall to 2-13 overall and 0-7 in the OAC.

Malory Brunett said, "I am very proud of the team for their effort today against a very talented John Carroll team. We were aggressive on defense and cause a lot of turnovers. Our players fought the entire game and we were able to put some points on the board."
John Carroll opened the scoring, as they scored five goals in the first five minutes of the game. Marietta slowed the Blue Streaks momentum when
Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa. /Freedom) scored off a free position shot for her 21st goal of the season. John Carroll answered with eight straight goal, and led 13-1 at the 10:22 minute mark of the first half. Three minutes later, Millheim halted the Blue Streaks run, with a free position goal. John Carroll ended the half with a pair of goals, and led 15-2 at the intermission.
The Blue Streaks controlled the second half as they scored six unanswered goals, and led 21-2 with just under six minutes to play in the game. Marietta continued to battle as
Jamie Denzer (Murrysville, Pa./Plum Senior) scored off a free position shot, for her fourth goal of the season. The Pioneers tacked on their final goal of the game when
Carlee Kernodle (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park) found the back of the net off a feed from Denzer with just under a minute to play in the game. Marietta fell 21-4.
The Pioneers were led by Millheim as she had a pair of goals, tied for a game high with two caused turnovers, and picked up four ground balls. "Shelby had a great game all over the field for us. She had some great takes on offense, made some big plays on defense, and helped out a lot in transition," added Coach Brunett.
Defensively for Marietta,
Taylor Carr (Charleston, W.Va./St. Albans),
Lindsay Horton (Birmingham, Ala. /John Carroll Catholic),
Emma Purington (Columbus, Ohio/Hamilton Township), and
Lauren Redfern (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) all
caused turnovers in the game.
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill. /Barrington) was in goal in the first half for the Pioneers, she faced 30 shots, 22 of which were on goal, and made seven saves.
Sam Mooney (New Cumberland, Pa. /Red Land) played the final 30 minutes, she faced 17 shots, 13 of which were on goal, and also made seven saves. "Both goalies contributed today, as Sam played very consistently, and Maddie played terrific in and out of the crease," concluded Coach Brunett.
Marietta will be back in action Wednesday (April 27) when wrap up their inaugural season on the road against Muskingum University, with the game scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
