MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College dropped a 9-0 decision to the University of Mount Union Saturday (April 6) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference men's tennis action. The Pioneers fall to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the OAC. Mount Union is 8-4 on the season and 2-1 in the OAC.
The Purple Raiders swept the doubles matches for the early 3-0 lead. At No. 1, Robert Cross and Zach Teffner downed
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and Shance Spencer, 8-2.
Eric DeLong (Lowell, Ohio/Marietta) and
Hanyang Zhang (Beijing, China/Hefei No. 1) fell to Justin Kelley and Antonio Massucci at No. 2, 8-1. In the No. 3 match, Jacob Barton and Scott Fletcher were 8-1 winners over
Caleb Garner (Frostburg, Md./Mountain Ridge) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg).
Mount Union won all six singles matches in straight-sets. Cross bested Spencer at No. 1, 6-1 and 6-0. At No. 2, Teffner beat Hirschfield, 6-3 and 6-2, while Massucci got past DeLong at No. 3, 6-3 and 6-4.
At No. 4, Watson fell to Kelley, 6-0 and 6-0. Barton won the No. 5 match against Zhang, 6-4 and 7-6 (9-7), while Tyler Tareshawty beat Garner at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-0.
Marietta travels to Westerville on Wednesday (April 10) for a 3:30 pm match at Otterbein University.
