WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Otterbein University swept Marietta College, 9-0, Wednesday (April 10) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference men's tennis action. The Pioneers fall to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the OAC. Otterbein improves to 13-1 on the season and 4-0 in conference matches.
The Cardinals started with a sweep of the doubles. In the top spot, Brandon Wall and Jared Deel downed
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion), 8-1. At No. 2,
Eric DeLong (Lowell, Ohio/Marietta) and
Hanyang Zhang (Beijing, China/Hefei No. 1) fell to Connor Radune and Tyler Wharton by the score of 8-2. In the No. 3 match, Derek Krieger and Tom Ohler blanked Calen Garner and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg), 8-0.
Otterbein posted straight-set wins in each of the six singles matches. At No. 1, Wall beat Spencer, 6-2 and 6-1. Hirschfield lost to Radune at No. 2, 6-1 and 7-6 (7-3). Wharton won at No. 3 over DeLong, 6-0 and 6-0.
At No. 4, Ohler downed Watson, 6-0 and 6-0. In the No. 5 match, Krieger beat Zhang by the same score. In the final match, Riley Yost topped Garner, 6-0 and 6-0.
Marietta travels to Mason, Ohio for three OAC matches this weekend at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. The Pioneers play Ohio Northern and Baldwin Wallace on Saturday (April 13) at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. Marietta plays rival Muskingum on Sunday (April 14) at 9 a.m.
