MASON, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team dropped a pair of 9-0 matches Saturday (April 13) at the Lindner Tennis Center. The Pioneers fell to Ohio Northern in the morning and Baldwin Wallace in the afternoon. Marietta is 6-11 overall and 1-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Ohio Northern (9-6 overall, 3-0 OAC) started the match by sweeping the doubles. In the top spot, Vinh Thai and Noah Elliott blanked
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), 8-0. Hoang Do and Zach Beaschler beat
Eric DeLong (Lowell, Ohio/Marietta) and
Hanyang Zhang (Beijing, China/Hefei No. 1) at No. 2, 8-2, while Connor Christian and Nate Meadors topped
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and Calen Garner at No. 3 by the same score.
Thai bested Spencer at No. 1 singles, 6-2 and 6-0. Hirschfield retired in his match at No. 2 with Elliott trailing 6-2 and 1-0. At No. 3, Andrew Cochran defeated DeLong, 6-0 and 6-1.
Watson fell to Christian at No. 4, 6-0 and 6-0. The best match of the day came at No. 5 where Joji Imatomi beat Zhang, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7) and 10-8. At No. 6, Joshua McClure was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Garner.
Baldwin Wallace (13-3 overall, 1-2 OAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles. Matt Harris and Dominic Polifrone downed Spencer and Hirschfield at No. 1, 8-2, while Roger Boyer and Jake Elbin beat DeLong and Zhang at No. 2 by the same score. At No. 3, Michael Benotti and Ben Binion shut out Garner and Watson, 8-0.
The Yellow Jackets got straight-set wins in all six singles matches. Polifrone defeated Spencer at No. 1, 6-1 and 6-0. At No. 2, Harris was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Hirschfield. Elbin beat DeLong at No. 3, 6-3 and 6-2.
Watson fell to Benotti at No. 4, 6-0 and 6-0. At No. 5, Boyer defeated Zhang, 6-3 and 6-2, while Miles Collins topped Garner at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-0.
Marietta hosts rival Muskingum University in its regular season finale on Wednesday (April 17) t 3:30 p.m.
