MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene University defeated a short-handed Marietta College squad by the score of 8-1 Friday (April 5) afternoon in women's tennis action. The Pioneers fall to 3-9 overall, while the Cougars move to 3-14 on the season.
Injuries forced Marietta to play with just four players and therefore spotted Mount Vernon points at No. 3 doubles and Nos. 5 and 6 singles due to defaults.
Sophomore
Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) accounted for Marietta's lone point in the match. Grim won her No. 3 singles match in three sets over Ashley Weber. Weber took the first set 6-1 and Grim won the second, 6-2, forcing a third-set tiebreaker. Grim doubled up Weber in the tiebreaker, 10-5, for the win.
In the No. 1 doubles match, Sarah Higgins and Weber beat Grim and
Anne Thompson (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie), 8-4. Aly Landis and Laurel Sidle downed
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)) and
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) at No. 2, 8-2.
Casey Clark blanked Nelson at No. 1 singles, 6-0 and 6-0. Higgins won at No. 2 over Thompson, 7-5 and 6-2, while Sarah Young defeated Haas at No. 4, 6-4 and 6-0.
