MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team closed out the nonconference portion of its schedule with a 7-2 win at Mount Vernon Nazarene University Friday (April 5) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 6-7 overall, while the Cougars slip to 5-12 on the season.
Marietta led the match 2-0 before the first serve of the afternoon do to default wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
The Pioneers made it 4-0 by sweeping the two remaining doubles matches. At No. 1,
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) posted an 8-5 win over Justin Haggard and Danny Mayotte.
Eric DeLong (Lowell, Ohio/Marietta) and
Hanyang Zhang (Beijing, China/Hefei No. 1) were 9-7 winners over Anthony Howard and Vince LoPrinzi at No. 2.
Mount Vernon picked up its two team points in the top two singles matches. Mayotte topped Spencer at No. 1, 6-1 and 6-1. Hirschfield dropped a hard-fought battle with Haggard at No. 2. Hirschfield won the first set, 6-3, and Haggard took the second by the same score. The third set tiebreaker went to Haggard, 13-11.
At No. 3, DeLong bested Howard, 6-1 and 6-2, while
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) beat Eric Miller at No. 4, 6-1 and 6-3.
Zhang grabbed Marietta's final point by outlasting LoPrinzi at No. 5, 6-3, 5-7 and 1-0 (11-9).
Marietta hosts the University of Mount Union on Saturday (April 6) at 1 p.m.
