Ohio Northern sweeps Softball

ADA, Ohio — Marietta College dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at league-leading Ohio Northern University Wednesday (April 17) afternoon. Originally scheduled for Friday, the games were moved up due to forecasted inclement weather in Ada this weekend.

The Polar Bears won game one by the score of 10-2 in five innings. ONU completed the sweep with a 4-2 win in the second game. Marietta falls to 17-17 on the season and 6-10 in the OAC. Ohio Northern improves to 21-11 overall and 14-2 in league play.

ONU took advantage of four Pioneer errors in the first game as eight of the Polar Bears' 10 runs were unearned. Ohio Northern scored in each of its five offensive innings plating two in the first, one each in the second and fourth and three in the third and fifth innings.

Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) (7-7) started in the circle for the Pioneers and was tagged with the loss. She pitched 2.0 innings and allowed six runs, one earned, on four hits with one walk. Hannah Richardson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) threw 2.1 innings and gave up four runs, one earned, on seven hits. She struck out two.

Kaitlin Surdej (13-5) went the distance for ONU giving up two runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings of work. She struck out five.

Marietta actually grabbed the early lead with a run in the first inning. Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo) led the game off with a double to left. Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) sacrificed her to third and then Kayla Alderson (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) laced a single up the middle scoring Tom.

The Pioneers other run came in the fifth. Kylie Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) reached on a one-out double into the left center gap. Following a flyout, Richardson smacked a single to right center scoring Daugherty.

Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game as she collected a pair of singles.

Ohio Northern scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning in game two and added another in the fourth for a 3-0 lead. The Pioneers got on the board with one in the sixth only to see the Polar Bears answer with one in the home half of the frame. MC added one run in the seventh to make it 4-2.

Maddie Anderson (6-2) started and got the win for ONU. She worked 5.0 shutout innings scattering four hits. Anderson walked four and struck out three. Surdej tossed the final 2.0 innings for her fourth save of the season. She gave up two runs on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Jaclyn Mulvain (Warren, Ohio/Champion) (4-7) threw a complete game in the losing effort. She pitched 6.0 innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits with one strikeout.

Sophomore Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) scored MC's first run when she reached on a one-out single in the sixth. Following a foul pop up for out number two, a single from Daugherty gave Marietta runners at first and second with two outs. Kaitlyn Carpenter (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) hit a sharp ground ball to the second baseman which was booted allowing Pallay to come around and score.

Marietta's run in the seventh was triggered by a lead-off walk to Britnee Kail (Dover, Ohio/Dover). Following a fly out, Richardson singled to right center and the speedy Kail scored all the way from first base. The Polar Bears retired the next two Pioneers to secure the victory.

Kail and Daugherty each had two singles in the game for Marietta.

Marietta returns home to host John Carroll University for an OAC doubleheader on Saturday (April 27). First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
