Softball finishes season with a split on Senior Day

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team finished its 2019 season with a doubleheader split against John Carroll University Saturday (April 27) afternoon on Senior Day at Marietta Field. The Pioneers won the opener, 7-3, while John Carroll took game two, 2-1.

Marietta finishes the season with an 18-18 overall record. The Pioneers went 7-11 in Ohio Athletic Conference games. John Carroll wraps up its season with a 14-24 overall mark and 4-14 in the OAC.

Two Pioneers concluded their playing careers in the Navy Blue and White. Marietta will graduate Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo) and Mackenzie Marshall (Sardis, Ohio/River) off of this year's team.

Marietta jumped on the Blue Streaks for three runs in the bottom of the first inning in game one. The Pioneers extended their lead to 7-0 with four more runs in the sixth. John Carroll finally got on the board plating three runs in the top of the seventh.

Hannah Richardson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) (1-0) started in the circle for Marietta and picked up her first win of the season with 4.0 shutout innings of work. She scattered three hits and struck out four. Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) got the save with 3.0 innings of relief. She gave up three runs on five hits and struck out three.

Jessica Cook (5-11) started and took the loss for John Carroll. Cook pitched 5.2 innings and allowed seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Elizabeth O'Grady faced two batters giving up one hit and retiring one.

Tom led off the home half of the first inning with a triple down the right field line. Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) grounded to second but Tom beat the throw at the plate for MC's first run. Kirk stole second and then moved to third on a fly out to centerfield.

Kayla Alderson (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) walked and stole second. A single up the middle from Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) drove in Kirk and moved Alderson to third base. Pallay stole second and Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) flied out to right field. On the play, John Carroll let the ball get away at third base allowing Alderson to scamper home.

In Marietta's four-run sixth inning, Cook and Erin Miller (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central) led off with singles. Marshall knocked in Cook with an RBI single to right center. Tom plated Miller with a single and Alderson smacked a two-run double off the wall in right field.

Tom went 3-for-4 with triple and two runs scored. Pallay, Miller and Marshall each had two hits in the game.

John Carroll pitcher Jenn Patterson (9-10) went the distance for the win in game two. She allowed one unearned run on six hits with four strikeouts.

Jaclyn Mulvain (Warren, Ohio/Champion) (4-8) started and got the loss for Marietta. She worked 2.2 innings and gave up two runs on six hits. Mulvain walked one and struck out one. Ashton Helmke (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) threw 4.1 shutout innings of relief allowing just two hits and striking out two.

The Blue Streaks struck for two runs in the third inning and then held on for the win. Marietta's lone run came in the fifth inning. Cook reached on a one-out single and then was lifted for pinch runner, Natalie Payton (St. Marys, W.Va./St. Marys).

Miller singled to left moving Payton to second. Following a flyout, Kaitlyn Carpenter (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) reached on an infield single to the shortstop. On the play, the JCU defender was unable to control the ball and that allowed Payton to come around and score.

Marietta managed to get the tying run into scoring position with one out in the seventh inning. But Patterson got a strikeout and a pop up to end the game.

Cook was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the second game finishing 2-for-3.
