Softball swept by Muskingum

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College softball team was swept by Muskingum University on Tuesday (April 16) on Marietta Field.  The Pioneers fell 12-3 in game one, and dropped game two, 9-6.  The wins improve the Fighting Muskies to 27-9 overall and 11-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference play and Marietta falls to 17-15 overall and 6-8 in the OAC.

Muskingum jumped out to an early lead with a run in the top of the first and added five runs in the second to lead 6-0 after two innings of play.  Marietta cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning when Kayla Alderson (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) hit a three run homerun to center field, to drive in Ashley Tschudy (New Philadelphia, Ohio/Indian Valley) and Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange).  The fourth inning was scoreless before the Fighting Muskies tacked on a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth to win 12-3.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in game two.  Alderson got the inning started with a two out double to center.  The next batter up, Hannah Richardson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central), singled to center to plate Alderson.  The two out rally continued when Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) tripled to the right center field gap to drive in Mackenzie Marshall (Sardis, Ohio/River) who pinch ran for Richardson.

Marietta added to its lead in the second when Erin Miller (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central) led off the inning with a single to right center.  Kaitlyn Carpenter (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) pinch ran for Miller and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Britnee Kail (Dover, Ohio/Dover) walked and was later driven in by a Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo) double to left center field.  A Kirk single advanced Tom to third, and she came in to score on a wild pitch.  The pair of runs in the second put the Pioneers up, 4-0.

Jaclyn Mulvain (Warren, Ohio/Champion) started game two for Marietta and she pitched four innings of shutout softball and allowed two hits.  Muskingum battled back in the top of the fifth as they plated seven runs, and grabbed a 7-4 lead.  The Pioneers responded in the bottom of the fifth inning when Richardson hit a two run homerun to left field, which plated Kirk who doubled to lead off the inning.  The two run homerun cut the Fighting Muskies edge to 7-6.

Muskingum tacked on a pair of runs in the top of sixth inning and took a 9-6 advantage.  Marietta was unable to rally and lost game two, 9-6.

Marietta will return to the diamond Friday (April 19) when they travel to take on Ohio Northern with first pitch of the double header scheduled for 1 p.m.
