Second half surge lifts Pioneers over Earlham

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team surged passed Earlham College with a 22-7 road victory on Monday (April 15).  The win improves the Pioneers to 5-9 overall and the loss drops the Quakers to 3-11 on the season.

Earlham jumped out to an early first quarter lead with back to back goals to open the game.  Marietta got on the scoreboard at the 4:28 minute mark of the quarter when Jackson McGill (New Market, Md./Oakdale) scored off a feed from John Sanford (Monrovia, Md./Urbana).  Less than a minute later, the Pioneers tied the game at 2-2 when Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) scored an unassisted goal.

The Quakers responded with a goal late in the quarter, but Chad Stowell (Watertown, Minn./Delano) found the back of the net with three seconds to play in the first quarter, and the teams entered the second quarter deadlocked at three goals apiece.

Marietta opened the second quarter strong with a pair goals to take a 5-3 advantage less than a minute into the second quarter.  The Pioneer goals were scored by Quinn Rundgren (Angier, N.C./Fuquay Varina) and Ficke.

Earlham answered with a goal 30 seconds later, and cut the Pioneers lead to 5-4.  20 seconds later, Rundgren scored his second goal of the game for Marietta.  The Pioneers scored their second straight goal when Stowell scored off an assist from Zach Klein (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen), to give Marietta a 7-4 edge.

After a Quakers goal, Marietta scored the final three goals of the half, and took a 10-5 lead into the intermission.  The Pioneer goals were scored by Stowell and Rundgren.

Marietta came out of the locker room ready to play as they scored four consecutive goals to stretch their lead to 14-5, two minutes into the third quarter.  The Pioneer goals were scored by Stowell and Ficke, as they each scored a pair of goals.

After Earlham slowed the Marietta momentum with the goal, the Pioneers rattled off five straight goals to end the third quarter and led, 19-6.  Ficke, Stowell, Jayson White (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico), Daniel Blaine (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty), and Rundgren all scored to end the third quarter for Marietta.

The Pioneers capped the game with a strong fourth quarter as they outscored the Quakers, 3-1.  The three Marietta goals were scored by Stowell, White and Rundgren.  The Pioneers defense held Earlham scoreless for the final nine and a half minutes of the game, and won 22-7.

Marietta was led by Stowell as he scored eight goals, picked up three ground balls, and caused a turnover.   Ficke and Rundgren each pitched in with five goals, and Ficke caused a game high two turnovers.  Sanford was instrumental in the game, as he won 21-24 faceoffs, and picked up a game high 19 ground balls.

Ryan McLane (Avon, Ohio/Avon) was in net for the Pioneers, he faced 21 shots, 11 of which were on goal, and made four saves.

Marietta will return to the field Thursday (April 18) when they travel to take on John Carroll University, with the game scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
