WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Wilmington College Saturday (April 13) afternoon. The Quakers posted a 3-2 win in game one and then downed the Pioneers by the score of 10-2 in six innings in the second game.
Marietta moves to 17-13 on the season and 6-6 in the OAC. Wilmington improves to 17-9 overall and 5-7 in conference games.
The Quakers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a pair of sacrifice flies to come from behind and beat the Pioneers. Marietta had taken a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning when
Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) smacked a two-run double to left.
Both pitchers went the distance. Grace Shell (8-4) got the win working 7.0 innings and allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and 12 strikeouts.
Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) (7-5) took the loss pitching 6.0 innings and giving up three runs on four hits with two walks.
Both teams played errorless defense.
In addition to Rockocy's two-run double,
Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) also doubled for the Pioneers.
Wilmington exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning of game two turning a 2-0 deficit into a 9-2 lead. The Quakers added a run in the sixth for the run rule victory.
Marietta scored a run in the second on an RBI double from
Erin Miller (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central).
Kayla Alderson (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) drove in the other Pioneer run with a single up the middle in the third.
The Quakers took advantage of a Marietta error in that nine-run fifth inning resulting in four unearned runs. All told, Wilmington sent 14 batters to the plate during the rally.
Jaclyn Mulvain (Warren, Ohio/Champion) (4-5) started in the circle for Marietta and took the loss. She threw 4.1 innings and gave up six runs, five earned, on five hits with three walks.
Airyanna Maurer (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) faced three batters in the fifth, all of which came around to score, and allowed two hits and walked one.
Ashton Helmke (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) pitched 1.0 inning and allowed one unearned run on two hits, She walked one and struck out one.
Alexis Stringfellow started for the Quakers and was charged with two runs on two hits with one walk in 2.0 innings of work. Hunter Salyers threw 2.0 shutout innings and allowed two hits, while Grace Shell (9-4) got the win with a pair of scoreless innings. She gave up one run, walked two and struck out one.
Hannah Richardson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game finishing 2-for-3.
Marietta returns home to host Bethany College for a nonconference doubleheader on Sunday (April 14). First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
