Softball splits at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio — Marietta College split an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at the University of Mount Union Wednesday (April 10) afternoon. The Pioneers won game one, 5-1, and the Purple Raiders took game two, 5-3. Marietta is now 17-11 overall and 6-4 in the OAC. Mount Union moves to 14-14 on the season and 2-8 in the OAC.

Sophomore Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) (7-4) had another strong outing in the circle for the Pioneers scattering five hits and allowing just one run. She struck out two and did not walk a Purple Raider batter.

Mount Union's lone run in the first game came on a solo home run by Maddie Pidgeon in the bottom of the first inning.

Marietta's offense was consistent scoring one run in five different innings. Senior Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two runs batted in from the leadoff spot. She opened the game with a walk and came around to score on a base hit from Hannah Richardson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central).

Tom drove in her first run in the second inning. She lined a single to right center scoring Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) who reached base on an error. Tom delivered another RBI single in the fourth inning. This time she knocked in Taylor Watts (Galloway, Ohio/West Jefferson) who pinch ran for Liston after she walked to start the inning.

Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) and Erin Miller (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central) each had RBI doubles in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, extending the Pioneers lead to 5-1.

Peyton Morrison (5-6) started and went the distance in the circle for Mount Union. She allowed five runs, four earned, on 11 hits. Morrison walked four and struck out two.

In addition to Tom, Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) and Richardson each had two hits in the game.

In the second game, Mount Union scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Marietta tried to rally in the final two innings. Richardson blasted a three-run home run in the sixth innings to cut the deficit to two, 5-3.

Marietta got a leadoff double in the seventh from Cook and had runners at first and third with one out after Britnee Kail (Dover, Ohio/Dover) singled. But Mount Union pitcher Alexandra Pasco (8-4) retired the next two hitters on fly balls to secure the win.

Pasco threw all 7.0 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. She walked one and struck out six.

Airyanna Maurer (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) (4-2) aterted and took the loss for the Pioneers. She gave up four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. Maurer walked one and struck out one. Richardson allowed one run on the three hits in 0.1 innings, while Ashton Helmke (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) gave up one hit in 1.0 innings of work.

Cook was the lone Pioneers to have two hits in the night cap.

Marietta plays at Wilmington College on Saturday (April 13). First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
