Pioneers drop road contest at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team dropped its road contest with Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Baldwin Wallace University, 30-5 on Saturday (March 30).  With the loss the Pioneers fall to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the OAC and with the win the Yellow Jackets improve to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.  

Baldwin Wallace struck first when they scored three minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead.  Marietta quickly responded when Zach Klein (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen) scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at 1-1.  The Yellow Jackets answered with nine straight goals, and took a 10-1 advantage into the second quarter.    

Baldwin Wallace carried its momentum over to the second quarter, as they scored eight unanswered goals, and entered the intermission ahead, 18-1.  

The Yellow Jackets came out of the locker room ready to play, as they scored the first five goals of the third quarter to extend their lead.  The Pioneers responded when Quinn Rundgren (Angier, N.C./Fuquay Varina) found the back of the net.  Marietta tacked on a second straight goal when Klein scored off a feed from Rundgren, to make the score 23-3, to enter the final quarter.  

Baldwin Wallace scored three early goals in the fourth quarter, and led 26-3 with just under 13 minutes to play in the game.  The Pioneers halted the run when Klein scored his third goal of the game off a feed from Rundgren.  After three more Yellow Jacket goals, Marietta scored its final goal of the game when Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) scored off an assist from Rundgren.  Baldwin Wallace tacked on a late goal, and won 30-5.  

The Pioneers were led by Klein as he had three goals, and picked up a ground ball.  Rundgren had a team high three assists, picked up two ground balls, and scored a goal.  Ficke scored a goal, picked up three ground balls, and caused a turnover.  

Defensively, Marietta was led by Daniel Blaine (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) as he caused a game high six turnovers, and picked up seven ground balls.  Jacob Morlando (White Bear Lake, Minn./Stillwater) pitched in with a pair of caused turnovers, and picked up four ground balls.  

Ryan McLane (Avon, Ohio/Avon) was in goal for the Pioneers, he faced 50 shots, 38 of which were on goal, and made eight saves.      

Marietta will return to the field Wednesday (April 3) when they host Capital University with the game set to start at 7 p.m.
