MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team fell to Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Capital University, 21-5 on Wednesday (April 3) night at Don Drumm Stadium. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in OAC play, and with the win the Crusaders improve to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in conference.
Capital jumped out to an early lead, as they scored seven unanswered goals in the first quarter, and entered the second quarter up 7-0.
The Crusaders opened the second quarter with three consecutive goals, and took a 10-0 lead, with 10 minutes to play in the second quarter. A minute and a half later, Marietta got on the scoreboard when
Justin Blasko (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) scored off a feed from
Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert). Thirty seconds later,
Zach Klein (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen) tacked on a second straight Pioneers goal, to make the score 10-2 with eight minutes to play in the half. Capital responded with a pair of goals, before Marietta answered with a goal by
Quinn Rundgren (Angier, N.C./Fuquay Varina). The Crusaders capped the half with a goal, and entered the intermission ahead, 13-3.
Capital came out of the locker room ready to play as they scored four third quarter goals, and entered the fourth quarter ahead, 17-3.
The Crusaders opened the fourth quarter with three goals, and led 20-3 with just over seven minutes to play in the game. The Pioneers continued to battle, as Ficke scored an unassisted goal. Thirty seconds later, Rundgren found the back of the net for his second goal of the game. Capital scored the final goal of the game, and won 21-5.
Marietta was led by Rundgren as he had two goals, an assist, and picked up a ground ball. Ficke, Blasko, and Klein each added a goal in the game. The defense was led by
Jacob Morlando (White Bear Lake, Minn./Stillwater) as he caused a pair of turnovers.
Daniel Blaine (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) helped the defense with a game high six ground balls, and a caused turnover.
Ryan McLane (Avon, Ohio/Avon) was in the goal for the Pioneers, he faced 54 shots, 31 of which were on goal, and made 10 saves in the game.
Marietta will return to the field Saturday (April 6) when they host the University of Mount Union, with the game scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
