GRANVILLE, Ohio — Denison University swept a nonconference doubleheader from Marietta College Thursday (March 28) afternoon. The Big Red won the first game by the score of 3-0 and then took game, 3-1. Marietta slips to 11-9 overall, while Denison improves to 6-4 on the season.
Denison's Taryn Welch (3-1) tossed a complete game gem in game one scattering four hits en route to the shutout. She walked two and struck out seven Pioneers.
The Big Red scored an unearned run in the first inning and then added two insurance runs in the second for the win. Claire Powell and Sam Kline each had two hits for Denison.
Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo),
Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange),
Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) and
Britnee Kail (Dover, Ohio/Dover) had one hit apiece for the Pioneers.
Jaclyn Mulvain (Warren, Ohio/Champion) (3-4) started and took the loss for the Pioneers. She worked 4.0 innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on six hits.
Airyanna Maurer (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) threw the final 2.0 innings and allowed no runs on one hit with one strikeout.
In the second game, Denison scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and then held on for the win.
Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) tried to help her own cause with a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning cutting the Big Red lead to 3-1.
The Pioneers loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning but couldn't get the RBI base hit.
Hannah Richardson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central), Carpenter and Kirk all singled to load the bases. But a pair of ground balls in the infield got the Big Red out of the inning without allowing a run.
Liston (4-3) started and took the loss. She threw 4.0 innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on three hits with two strikeouts. Richardson worked the final 2.0 innings and retired all six batters she faced.
Colleen Hoffman (2-2) went 6.1 innings for the win. She allowed one run on seven hits and struck out four. Sarah Hamre notched her first save of the season by recording the final two outs in the seventh.
Kayla Alderson (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) was the only player from either team to collect two hits in the game.
Marietta travels to Tiffin on Saturday (March 30) for a doubleheader at Heidelberg University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
