MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from Kenyon College Sunday (March 24) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Pioneers move to 11-7 on the season, while Kenyon falls to 13-9 overall.
"I was happy to see us bounce back and get two wins today after the tough games against BW yesterday," Marietta head coach
Jenn Castle said. "Maicy (Kirk) made some big plays for us today at short stop that shifted the momentum our way. We talked to the team about needing to make big plays in big moments and Maicy did that for us today."
Pioneer catcher
Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) led the offensive attack in game one. Cook went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in.
Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) had two hits, scored twice and one RBI.
Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while
Kayla Alderson (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Ashley Tschudy (New Philadelphia, Ohio/Indian Valley) also had a pair of singles in the game as Marietta collected 13 total hits.
Jaclyn Mulvain (Warren, Ohio/Champion) started in the circle and threw 5.2 innings. She allowed five runs, two earned, on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. Freshman
Ashton Helmke (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) (2-1) got the win with 1.1 innings of relief. She gave up two hits and struck out one.
Emily Pater (7-3) went the distance for Kenyon in the losing effort. She was charged with six runs on 13 hits with a pair of walks and no strikeouts.
Marietta jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Cook and Alderson delivered RBI singles in the first inning and Kirk plated one run in the second with an infield single. Cook delivered a two-run double in the fourth making it 5-2.
Kenyon scored three runs in the top of the sixth to even the score, 5-5. The big blow was a two-run home run off the bat of Grace Pilz.
The Pioneers grabbed the lead right back in the home half of the frame. Pallay reached on a two-out single up the middle. Cook followed with a single to left moving Pallay into scoring position at second base. Alderson lined a single to right scoring Pallay with the winning run.
Game two was a pitcher's duel between Kenyon's Nicole Bishay and MC's
Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central). Both pitchers tossed complete games. Liston (4-2) got the win after scattering four hits and allowing one run. She struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Bishay (1-2) took the loss after working 6.0 innings and giving up two runs on three hits. She walked one and struck out one.
Alderson drove in Marietta's two runs with a two-run blast over the fence in right center in the fourth inning. It was her second home run of the season.
Kenyon's lone run came on a solo home run from Pilz in the seventh.
Marietta travels to Denison University for a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday (March 26). First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
