MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team posted a 6-3 win over visiting Heidelberg University Saturday (March 23) in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both schools. The Pioneers improve to 3-6 overall, while Heidelberg slips to 0-3 on the season.
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)) and
Liz Reed (Logan, Ohio/Logan) blanked Samantha Escalera and Megan Novess, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles for a quick Pioneer lead. MC's No. 2 duo of
Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Anne Thompson (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie) were 8-5 winners over Jillian Goulet and Meridith Lucius. In the No. 1 doubles match, Heidelberg's Emmy Flottman-Mullen and Esmerelda Salazar beat
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock), 8-6.
The Student Princes defaulted the No. 6 singles match making it 3-1 Marietta. The Pioneers secured the victory with quick wins at Nos. 4 and 5 singles. Both Grim and Haas posted 6-0, 6-0 wins. Grim beat Novess at No. 4 and Haas downed Escalera at No. 5.
Thompson defeated Lucius at No. 3, 6-4 and 6-0. At No. 1, Goulet edged Nelson, 6-4 and 6-4. Salazar topped Warvell at No. 2, 6-2 and 6-0.
Marietta hosts John Carroll University on Sunday (March 24) at 11:30 a.m.
