MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team opened Ohio Athletic Conference play with a 6-3 win over Heidelberg University Saturday (March 23) afternoon. The Pioneers are 5-5 overall and 1-0 in the OAC. Heidelberg falls to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.
The Pioneers grabbed two wins in doubles play to take the early lead. In the top spot,
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) downed Tate Schoen and Porus Shroff by the score of 8-2. At No. 3,
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) were 8-1 winners over Diego Flores and Jordan Robbins.
Heidelberg kept the match close with a win at No. 2 doubles. Kyle Alexander and Ryan newman topped
Eric DeLong (Lowell, Ohio/Marietta) and
Hanyang Zhang (Beijing, China/Hefei No. 1), 9-7.
Spencer and Hirschfield won their respective singles matches. Spencer beat Alexander at No. 1, 6-1 and 6-2, while Hirschfield bested Schoen at No. 2, 6-1 and 6-1.
Zhang took the No. 5 match from Flores, 6-2 and 6-0. At No. 6 Emerick posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Robbins.
The Student Princes claimed the middle two matches. At No. 3, Newman beat DeLong, 4-6, 6-4 and 1-0 (10-8). Shroff downed Watson at No. 4, 6-1 and 6-1.
Marietta hosts John Carroll University on Sunday (March 24) at 9:30 a.m.
