MARIETTA, Ohio — Defending Ohio Athletic Conference men's tennis regular season and tournament champion John Carroll University defeated Marietta College by the score of 9-0 Sunday (March 24) afternoon. The Pioneers slip to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in the OAC, while the Blue Streaks are 1-8 overall and 1-0 in the OAC.
John Carroll took a 3-0 lead after doubles. In the top spot, Andy Siciliano and David Sinese posted an 8-4 win over
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion). At No. 2, Gustavo Garcia and Andrew Triner beat
Eric DeLong (Lowell, Ohio/Marietta) and
Hanyang Zhang (Beijing, China/Hefei No. 1), 8-2. In the final doubles match, Parker Holyn and Doug Moore blanked
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg), 8-0.
The Blue Streaks recorded straight-set wins in all six singles matches. Sinese topped Spencer at No. 1, 6-2 and 6-3. At No. 2, Hirschfield fell to Siciliano, 6-1 and 6-1, while Garcia beat DeLong at No. 3, 6-0 and 6-1.
In the No. 4 match, Triner was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Watson. At No. 5, Moore defeated Zhang, 6-1 and 6-1 and at No. 6, Jack Payne topped Emerick, 6-1 and 6-0.
Marietta hosts Bethany College for a nonconference match on Tuesday (March 26) at 4 p.m.
