MARIETTA, Ohio — Baldwin Wallace University spoiled Marietta College's home opener with a doubleheader sweep of the Pioneers Saturday (March 23) afternoon. BW won the first game 16-1 and the second game 9-0. Both were stopped after five innings.
The Pioneers slip to 9-7 overall and 0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets improve to 14-2 on the season and 2-0 in the OAC.
Baldwin Wallace broke open the first game with an eight-run second inning. The Yellow Jackets added two runs in the third and five more in the fifth. BW collected 16 hits, including three home runs, in the game.
Marietta scored its lone run in the second inning.
Kayla Alderson (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) led off with a double to right field and advanced to third on a ground out.
Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) followed with a single to left scoring Alderson. Alderson and Rockocy had Marietta's only two hits in the game.
Nikki Camarati (8-1) started and got the win. She pitched 4.0 innings and allowed one run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Abby Cosart retired all three hitters she faced.
Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) (3-2) started and took the loss. Liston worked 1.0 inning and allowed seven runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Ashton Helmke (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) was charged with four runs on six hits in 2.0 innings, while
Airyanna Maurer (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) gave up five runs on five hits in 2.0 innings.
In the second game, Baldwin Wallace scored a run in the first and second and two more in the third for a 4-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets put the game away with a five-run fifth inning.
Camarati got her second win of the day once again working 4.0 innings. She allowed no runs on one hit with a pair of walks and five strikeouts. Cosart gave up one hit and struck out one in 1.0 inning of relief.
Jaclyn Mulvain (Warren, Ohio/Champion) (3-3) started and was tagged with the loss. She threw 4.0 innings and allowed nine runs, seven earned, on 13 hits with two walks and one strikeout. Liston worked 1.0 inning and gave up two hits and struck out one.
Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) and
Britnee Kail (Dover, Ohio/Dover) had Marietta's two hits in the game.
Marietta hosts Kenyon College for a nonconference doubleheader on Sunday (March 24) at 1:00 p.m.
