WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team was defeated by Washington and Jefferson College, 17-3 Wednesday (March 20). With the loss the Pioneers fall to 1-6 on the season, and with the win the Presidents improve to 2-4 overall.
Washington and Jefferson scored three early goals, to take a 3-0 lead with 18 minutes to play in the opening half. Marietta responded three minutes later with a goal by
Rachel Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity) off a free position shot. The Presidents answered with seven consecutive goals and took a 10-1 edge, with just under three minutes to play in the half.
Sarah Stutler (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Acdemy) responded for the Pioneers, as she scored off a free position shot to cut the lead to 10-2. Washington and Jefferson tacked on a pair of late goals, and entered the intermission ahead, 12-2.
The Presidents came out of the locker room ready to play, as they scored the five straight goals second half goals to take a 17-2 edge with just over nine minutes to play in the game. After eight minutes of scoreless action, Sivie notched her second goal of the game to cut the lead to 17-3. The Pioneers continued to battle, but fell 17-3.
The Pioneers were led by Sivie as she had a pair of goals, four draw controls, and a pair of ground balls. Stutler notched a goal, and secured a draw control in the game for Marietta.
Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa. /Freedom), and
Emma Purington (Columbus, Ohio/Hamilton Township) each caused a turnover in the game.
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill. /Barrington) was in the goal in the first half for the Pioneers as she faced 25 shots, 21 of which were on goal, and made nine saves.
Marietta will be back in action Saturday (March 23) when they open Ohio Athletic Conference play against Heidelberg, with the game scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Fans can follow all the Pioneer teams all year long at pioneers.marietta.edu.
