Pioneers drop OAC opener

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team opened Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action with a 12-5 loss to Heidelberg University Saturday (March 23).  With the loss the Pioneers fall to 1-7 overall and 0-1 in OAC action, and the Student Princes improve to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Heidelberg took an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the opening two minutes of the game.  Three minutes later Marietta tied the game at 1-1 when Rachel Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity) scored off a free position shot.  The Pioneers scored their second consecutive goal and took a 2-1 lead, when Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa. /Freedom) scored off a free position shot, with just under 19 minutes to play in the half.

The Student Princes responded with eight straight goals to take a 9-2 advantage into the intermission.

Heidelberg continued to play well and scored the opening two goals of the second half, and led 11-2 at the 22:06 minute mark of the half.  Marietta halted the run when Carlee Kernodle (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park) found the back of the net, to make the score 11-3.

After the Student Princes scored a goal with 13 minutes to play in the game, the Pioneers responded with a pair of goals.  The first Marietta goal was scored by Jamie Denzer (Murrysville, Pa./Plum Senior) as she scored off a feed from Millheim.  After 11 minutes of scoreless action Sivie scored her second goal of the game, and cut the Heidelberg edge to 12-5.  The Pioneers continued to battle, but fell 12-5.

Marietta was led by Sivie as she had a pair of goals, three ground balls, and caused a turnover.  Kernodle, MIllheim, and Denzer all pitched in with a goal.  Defensively, Lindasy Horton and Emma Purington (Columbus, Ohio/Hamilton Township) each caused a pair of turnovers, and Horton picked up three ground balls.

Sam Mooney (New Cumberland, Pa. /Red Land) played a majority of the game in the goal for the Pioneers as she faced, 11 shots, 10 of which were on goal, and made seven saves.

Marietta will return to the field Monday (March 25) when they host Saint Vincent College, with the game scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
