Softball takes two from Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Marietta College swept a non-conference doubleheader at Washington & Jefferson College Wednesday (March 20) afternoon. The Pioneers won the first game, 5-2, and completed the sweep with a 7-6 win in game two. Marietta improves to 9-5 overall, while the Presidents slip to 5-7 on the season.

"I was happy with how many hits we put on the board and how confident our hitters approached each at bat today," said Marietta head coach Jenn Castle. "We need to tighten up our defense in preparation for our conference opener on Saturday."

Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) (3-1) earned the win in game one with a complete game performance. She worked 7.0 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits. Liston walked three and struck out six.

"Maddi pitched a great game and was in control on the mound," Castle said. "She stepped up today and was able to get the defense out of some big innings."

Washington & Jefferson scored an unearned run in the first inning and held the lead until the fourth. The Pioneers tied the game on an RBI single by Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo). MC grabbed the lead with three more runs in the sixth. Megan Gummere (Granville, Ohio/Granville) delivered an RBI single and Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) smacked a two-run double.

Kristen Fuertes (3-3) took the loss. She threw 7.0 innings and gave up five runs on 13 hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) led the Pioneer offense with three hits, a double and two runs scored. Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange), Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) and Tom each had two hits. Rockocy also had a double.

In game two, the Presidents scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game, 6-6. Tom drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the top of the seventh.

A two-run home run from Pallay in the third gave MC the early lead. The Pioneers scored in every inning from the third to the seventh. Pallay had three hits in the game including a double, home run, two RBI and three runs scored.

Ashton Helmke (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) (1-1) got the win after working the final 1.1 innings. She retired all four batters she faced. Jaclyn Mulvain (Warren, Ohio/Champion) started and worked 2.0 innings. She allowed two runs on four hits. Airyanna Maurer (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) threw 3.2 innings and gave up four runs on four hits.

Alisha Kulka started for Washington & Jefferson and pitched 3.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits. Taylor Andres (2-4) took the loss after giving up five runs, three earned, on five hits in 4.0 innings of work.

Marietta returns home to open Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday (March 23) against Baldwin Wallace. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
